Liz Sabol of Liz Sabol Jewelry Art, Pittsburgh This years challenge involved designing a jewelry piece featuring three Sri Lankan blue sapphires, sourced from the projects sponsor, Omi Gems in Los Angeles, for Jenny OLeary, a young widow and mother of two boys. In the fictional scenario, Jennys mother in law wanted to have a special piece created for Jenny that would serve as a tribute to her son Tim, the man she and Jenny had both loved and lost too soon. Our nine participating designers created jewelry to honor Tims legacy and his devotion to his family and the community he served as a police officer. Throughout the year, we posted a different designers vision online, along with the story behind it. In October, we invited readers and viewers to vote for their favorite designs, and Liz Sabol claimed the top prize with her colorful pendant that featured two detachable tie tacks.
